See me the Emergent Media Center
We have unprecedented power literally at our fingertips. But before we place a finger on a keyboard or a screen; before we learn a single technique for harnessing this power; before we start imagining the possibilities that await our creative genius; and especially before we get carried away by our own cleverness, we must take stock of who we are.
Unlike the latest version of our favorite software, the best human qualities are not fleeting. We must consciously cultivate compassion, integrity, courage, diligence, kindness and responsibility, as opposed to believing that “creating trends” or being “up to date” is something to be admired.
Innovation is not an ethical position.
Technological ability does not make someone a good person.
Let us not be fooled into thinking that what has been tried and true is not worthy of our time, for moral judgment, ethical behavior, and self-reflection are all tried and true strategies for living in the world. To avoid disaster, we must learn to be an excellent pilot before we step into the cockpit.
